First fundraising experience

My first fund raising idea was to get all my family to come together and donate their unwanted clothing.
There is a donation service in my town which takes unwanted clothes and sends them to places of need in country and abroad. By donating the clothes they pay you 40 pence per kilo, by getting all my old bits and pieces along with my families I managed to make £16.
Not much but it's a start!

VSO/ICS

I mentioned before the programme i'm going on is a VSO-ICS programme, a lot of people will not really have any idea what this means, so here is a bit of information of who VSO-ICS are and the work that they do. They are seperate companies who share in a vision and so are partners together. They allow 18-25 year olds to volunteer free of charge but each volunteer has a fundraising target that must be met (based on household income).

VSO stands for: Voluntary Service Overseas.
ICS stands for: International Citizen Service.

The VSO is a non-governmental organization, based in the UK, who offers aid to any country that requires it, in all sectors, ranging from sexual health, to poverty and natural disasters. They work in the Worlds least developed countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
What they do:
They help poor people by:
-Improving health and education services.
-Helping people access enough food and income

-Making governments and service providers accountable to communitites.

Shown below is a map, highlighted are the sections of the world that VSO works in.

The ICS is an organization, specifically for young people, and was set up by 6 parent organizations, one of which is the VSO. ICS aims to offer sustainable help to developing nations, whilst creating ‘global citizens’ from both the host and the visiting nations (backed by the UK government). All UK-based 18-25-year-olds are welcome to apply, regardless of background, qualifications, disability and work history.

Hello blogging world!

So, today my 'development officer' sent me a link to previous volunteers blogs and it sparked an interest as they werent necissarily formal but they were extremelly imformative as to what to expect on your volunteer journey.

I have been placed on the VSO ICS programme, going to a place called Nyimba in Zambia. I'm really not too sure what to expect as the previous blogs haven't been to Nyimba and www.google.co.uk doesn't have a large quantity of pictures so I guess it will be a bit of a surprise?! All good things come to those who wait.. So I guess i'll just have to wait and see.

To take part in this programme I have to fundraise £800. Which may not seem like a lot of money for such an amazing oppertunity but, when I work a lot, am useless at baking so cake sales were out of the question, all my friends have gone to university and the local supermarkets unfortunatley wont let one single person bag pack alone so the £800 seems like such a daunting target. But I will do it..  Somehow! I will just have to get creative, I'll update you on my progress.

The theme of the programme is :
HEALTH

As soon as I saw that it ignited an interest in which area in healthcare as it is such a broad spectrum, HIV/AIDS?, hygiene?, meantal health?, nutrition? etc. etc. etc.
I am going on a training weekend 6th-8th December in Bath so I think we will be briefed a bit more on the specifics of the programme- Again, I'll update you!
